Dogs and the law

Microchipping

The law requires you to microchip your dog.

You must ensure your pet is chipped by the time it is 8 weeks old.

Your dog must also still wear a collar and tag with your name and address on it when out in a public place.

If your dog is microchipped but does not have a collar and tag you can be fined up to £5000

It is your responsibility to keep your dog’s microchipping information up to date.

Check your dog’s chip number to find out where your dog is registered.

If you do not have the chip number you can ask a vet, a civic enforcement officer or a rescue centre to scan it for you.

If a dog is collected from Stray Aid [external link], the owner will be advised they must have their dog micro-chipped.

They can provide this service at the time of collection.

If a dog is to be re-homed, it will be microchipped before being released to the new owner.

Our enforcement officers always carry a microchip scanner to identify and help reunite dogs and their owners.

Buying a dog

If you buy a dog, ask for proof the dog you are buying is chipped.

You can check this on:

  • microchip certificates
  • vet records
  • pet passports
  • insurance papers

Remember to update the chip details to your name and address when you buy a dog.
