Residential and nursing care
Care homes can provide two major kinds of care.
Residential care home
A residential care home provides:
- personal care
- meals
- accommodation
For people who can no longer manage to live independently.
They receive help and support in their own home.
Visiting district nurses provide any nursing needs.
Nursing care home
A nursing home provides:
- personal care
- meals
- around the clock qualified nursing care
Some care homes offer both kinds of care.

Assessing your needs
You may be eligible for support. It is advised that you contact adult social care for an assessment.
Adult social care will make arrangements with the home and in some cases provide funding towards the care. This depends on individual circumstances.
You can make arrangements to move into a residential or nursing care home yourself. This would mean you arrange to pay for your own care.
