Welcoming new traders to the market

Welcoming new traders to the market
04 July 2024

A host of new traders are being welcomed to Darlington Market as works to renovate the historic venue near completion. Beaded Treasure, Haus of Moss and Gina’s Gems & Collectables have all already started moving into their new units, whilst Marketplace Fish & Chips and an as-yet untitled continental deli from Chef Matei Baran will open in August.

The new tenants will join an already extensive list of traders as work is being completed on phase 3 of the historic venue’s redevelopment, which represents a significant investment in the iconic town-centre building.

Beaded Treasure will sell a range of handmade jewellery across five categories: retro; vintage; mid-century; classic; and modern. Ambica, who runs the business, started out trading on pop-up stalls across the North East in 2021, including at the Town’s outdoor market. She has now made the step to open a permanent location at Darlington. In addition to jewellery, Beaded Treasure will also sell customised accessories such as sunglasses, belts, bags, and seasonal pieces.

Haus of Moss started out as a quality online florist and the move to Darlington Market will be the first physical presence for the brand. The business caters for a range of floristry needs, including hand-tied bouquets; bridal and wedding flowers; funeral arrangements; and a range of options for local businesses such as cafes and restaurants.

Gina’s Gems & Collectibles, run by Gina Cengher, sells second-hand and pre-loved treasures that have been painstakingly rescued and restored, helping to match iconic items with new owners. Wares on sale include vintage clothing, bags, crockery and a range of speciality pieces.

Michael Harvey, Manager at Darlington Market, said: “The renovation of the Market has seen a rush of new tenants getting in touch, with some brilliant ideas to add to our already extensive offer. We’ve pushed the boat out with phase 3 of the Market’s redevelopment, and there is a real buzz around the venue and it’s brilliant to see the Market going from strength to strength.”

In addition to the new retail brands that are due to open, two new food-focussed offerings are set to welcome the public from August. Marketplace Fish and Chips, run by Adam Gilmore, will operate from the repurposed fishmonger’s stall, and in addition to tasty fresh-cooked treats, the business will also sell wet fish to cook at home.

Chef Matei Baran, who already operates Haus of Bratwurste at the Market, has now confirmed the opening date of his much-anticipated continental deli, which will serve customers from early August. The deli will take on an Italian theme, acting as a deli by day, but offering small plates and wine by the glass in the evenings.

Cllr Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy, said: “The indoor market brings retail, hospitality and leisure together under one roof and continues to evolve and increase in popularity. I am delighted to see that the extensive redevelopment work, and the continued dedication of our existing traders and everyone at Market Asset Management which operates the market, is attracting such a fantastic range of entrepreneurs whose businesses will add greatly to our local economy and help to ensure Darlington remains a vibrant and exciting place to live, work or visit. I am looking forward to watching the new businesses grow as they settle into their new home and encourage you all to pop down and support these fantastic new additions which are helping to bring the market back to life."
